My feelings about Mr. Norton were wrong but my gut instincts were right. He helps people for his own selfish reasons. To have more pride and to look down on people. As if they cant survive on their own, they need his help, because he's so great. Underneath every thing he is arrogant and discriminates. This is reminds me of what the grandfather to the narrator's family, to do everything the white people tell you but to secretly hate them. Mr. Norton is giving and education to black but only because he looks down on them. And the fact that the narrator actually believes that he is giving hope contributes to his blindness. He thinks that Mr. Norton is giving him a chance and is sort of thanks him. Like when he offers to show him off campus and stuff. When they met Mr. Trueblood off campus Norton later acts nicer around him. I think because he wanted to do the same with his daughter when he says "i cant believe shes my own flesh and blood" it could mean he is in secure because he daughter is so amazing unlike him. Or that he would want to have incestuous sex with his daughter. Even thought Mr. Norton is educated he is still has the "trailer trash" white in side him.
