Brother Jack accuses Clifton of being a traitor still because he carried the Sambo doll and says they only used the narrator to preach the brotherhoods ideas because its the brotherhoods job to tell the community what they think. The narrator heated at this point says that he just wants to be "the great white father" and take over. SURPRISE! His fricken eye falls out because it is not real! AH this book has too many twists for me. It all makes sense, he cant advance for the black community because he can not "see" where they are coming from.
When the narrator is in disguise, he wear thick green glasses and everyone seems to mistake him for pastor Rinehart. Symbolic for the facts that he preaches ideas for other. Maybe the ideas shape them, because they are not able to shape themselves.
