I think there are three parts to a human. You're soul which is who you are, you're personalty. Whether you're stubborn, funny, a liar..etc whom ever you were created to be is your soul. Your mind which is like your back ground and the information you learn, which is the variable in your life and may or may not change. And your body which portrays all of this. For example a very hard headed serious guy, who will fight for anything he want is his soul. If he were to live in San Francisco he'd probably fight for legalizing marijuana or something liberal. But if he were to live in the South he'd probably fight against the democrats. Where he lives can determine his mind but this guy's soul will always be a fighter. Anyways I see the narrator like this a little when he decides to preach for the brother hood because he always enjoyed public speaking now he is doing against white people rather than sharing the "social responsibility". This is good though, because there is hints that he did not COMPLETELY change into some rebel, he's just using his gifts and talents for another good.
